Make mathematical thinking visible.

Visual Maths Builder helps teachers create clear, classroom-ready representations. Generate examples, use your own values and reveal the mathematics one thought at a time.

Fraction of an Amount
Animated fraction of an amount bar model Three quarters of twenty is modelled by splitting twenty into four equal parts, finding one part, then selecting three parts.

Start with the whole.

Move from question to model, one thought at a time.

Watch Visual Maths Builder turn classroom questions into clear, staged representations. Each example is designed to reveal the mathematical structure gradually, so pupils can focus on the reasoning rather than just the final answer.

Built for classroom explanation

Build the explanation, one idea at a time.

A finished diagram shows a result. A carefully sequenced model can reveal the reasoning. VMB follows the same meaningful stages a teacher might build on the board.

Ratio — One Share Known
Animated ratio one share known model Pencils and pens are in the ratio three to five. Twelve pencils are known, so one equal part is four and the pen share is twenty.

Start with the ratio structure.

Learning happens when pupils think

Understanding grows through noticing, questioning and connecting.

VMB is designed to support explanation and classroom discussion, helping pupils attend to structure, make connections and reason about why the mathematics works.

Fraction of an Amount, Reverse Fraction of an Amount, Sharing in a Ratio, Ratio — One Share Known, Ratio — Difference Given, Whole Number Plus Whole Number, Decimal Plus Decimal, Multiplying and Dividing by Powers of Ten, Division by a Single Digit, Exploding Dots, Addition with Integers and Area of a Rectangle are available now, with more generators in development. Each generator uses the same clear interface while providing representations and teaching sequences designed specifically for its mathematics.

Created for the classroom

Every generator begins with the mathematics.

Visual Maths Builder is created by a secondary mathematics teacher in Scotland. It grew from a simple aim: to make high-quality mathematical representations easier to construct, present and discuss during lessons.

Feedback from classroom teachers is helping to shape the project as it develops.

The project is being developed around classroom practice, mathematical structure and the belief that technology should support pupils’ thinking rather than replace it.
